Crowds mourn Jota in his hometown in Portugal

Crowds held vigil for Diogo Jota in his hometown to pay tribute to the Liverpool forward and brother Andre Silva, who died in a car crash on Thursday.

    Their parents, grandfather and other family members held private mourning at a church in the city before it is open to the public for a funeral on Saturday.

    Fans holding Portuguese flags, flowers and other souvenirs cried as they lined up to pay their respects.

    The event is attend by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa Prime Minister Luis Montenegro. National team players Joao Moutinho, Diogo Dalot and Ricardo Horta as well as Jota’s agent Jorge Mendes.

    As a child, Jota played for local club Condumar SC, which name its academy after him. “Academy Diogo Jota” in 2022.

    On the sign is a quote from Chota that reads, “It doesn’t matter where we come from. It matters where we’re going.”

    Outside the club shirts and scarves were place in a candle ring.

    Similarly, at Anfield, where many fans paid their respects. Including former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and former Liverpool City Councillor Peter Millea. 

    Fans also laid flowers, scarves and shirts outside Wolves’ Molineux stadium, Jota’s former club before his move to Anfield.

    At Wimbledon, Portuguese tennis player Francisco Cabral wore a black ribbon to mourn his countryman who had died.

    There was a minute of silence at the Women’s Euro 2025 match between Denmark and Sweden.

    The funeral will take place at Igreja Matriz de Condomar in Condomar at 10:00 a.m. (local time) on Saturday.
